Sammath Naur
Mythopoeic Society of Hawaii
About Us
|
Just like a book, we are bound together in our love of story. We are constantly
adding new pages to our story. We enjoy stories that take us to other worlds
and land of long ago or far in the future in order to learn about ourselves in
the present. We are believers that all things are possible. We encourage
other dreamers to join in with us.
We are associated with the National Mythopoeic Society.
Our History
Our
group was formed in 1975 by two dreamers Ellie and Debby, who have both long since
moved on to other adventures on the mainland, but who remain with us in spirit
and on rare occasions look in on us in person. They are our founding elfin
mothers. Shortly after they founded the group, Steve joined and has remained
with the group through thick and thin. He's really a golden treasure.
Another long standing member is Burt, who is a primary host for many functions.
He's the bard of the North Shore. Numerous other people have joined us,
some staying only a little while before journeying on and others remaining for
a few years, and others lingering still. We also have some wee folks running
around, though some are not so wee anymore. The smallest ones are currenly
ages 7-12.
For many years the group met on Sunday afternoons once a month and spend long
fun filled times at the North Shore with volleyball, sumptuous potluck dinners,
lively discussions, games of charades, dictionary, other activities. Eventually
meetings were switched to Saturday meetings in the early 80s. Along the
way a secondary group, Mo'olelo Hoaloha, had been formed to discuss
other genres. Originally this group had other members who were not part
of Sammath Naur and vice versa. But in recent years we've maintained
a core group of people who were in both groups. In the late 90s, it was
decided to combine the groups into one, so that instead of many of us meeting
twice a month (once for each group), we would only meet once a month for one or
the other. Recently books chosen tend toward fantasy / science fiction.
At our 20th anniversary which was celebrated at Kokee State Park on Kauai,
we were presented with a banner which was created by our elfin mothers.
The banner pictured above depicts a volcano. Since we are located in Hawaii
with it's volcanoes, the name Sammath Naur was chosen for the group.
The name comes from Sammath Naur the crack of doom in The Lord of the Rings
by JRR Tolkein.
Our 25th anniversary was celebrated by hosting on the Big Island the 2000 Mythcon,
a conference for the National Mythopoeic Society.
Though many have passed through our ranks, a number have remained. Currently
we number about dozen or so with some members disappearing and reappearing at
will. Some of us are like family and some of us have family. Parents
with children are welcome in the group.
Current members of 20 years or more in the group: Steve, Ken(Burt), Ken(Willy),
Ed, John, Chris, and Vanessa.
